Labor Day
alicia_coleman
Labor Day celebration.Good Morning!  Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September that celebrated the economic and social contributions of workers.

Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday while serving as secretary of the CLU (Central Labor Union) of New York in 1882.  It became a federal holiday in 1894.

Early celebrations included a street parade, a festival and speeches by prominent men and women. The holiday  is now regarded as a rest and parties.

Labor Day also marks the marks the beginning of NFL and college football seasons.

How will you spend your Labor Day?

Steampunk brass watch cog3  “It lay heavily in her hands, the crystal face gleaming, the golden body exquisitely machined. It was very like a clock, or a compass, for there were hands pointing to places around the dial, but instead of the hours or the points of the compass there were several little pictures, each of them painted with extraordinary precision, as if on ivory with the finest and slenderest sable brush.” – Phillip Pullman, The Golden Compass

Steampunk brass watch cog3  “To some, ‘steampunk’ is a catchall term, a concept in search of a visual identity. To me, it’s essentially the intersection of technology and romance. – Jake von Slatt

Steampunk brass watch cog3  “In a properly automated and educated world, then, machines may prove to be the true humanizing influence. It may be that machines will do the work that makes life possible and that human beings will do all the other things that make life pleasant and worthwhile ” – Isaac Asimov, Robot Visions

Fourth of July
alicia_coleman
Fourth of July2   A day celebrating our country's independence. A day full of sun, fireworks, cookouts with hotdogs and hamburgers and time in the pool. Sometimes baseball games or sack races or relaxing in an air-conditioned room sipping lemonade.

However you celebrate, remember that this day represents Freedom. Freedom to worship as you wish, free speech and due process, among other things. Freedom of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Let's be happy. Happy Fourth of July!

Welcome to Teaser Tuesday--Steampunk.  Each Tuesday, I will
post a snippet from a story or book in the Steampunk genre from
my personal bookshelf.   Here is today's selection.

"She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.  "Wait a moment.  Why am I speaking with you at all?  My Lord, your behavior last night!"  She stood and began to swish about the cluttered little room, her eyes sparking fiercely.  She pointed an accusatory finger at him.  "You are not simply a werewolf; you, my lord, are a rake.  That is what you are!"

Here's the Blurb:

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations.  First, she has no soul.  Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead.  Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.
Where to go from there?  From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire--and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.  With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia is responsible.  Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society?  Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing?  Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

"She was coming up on Eszterhazy himself now, high and fast.
He had all the disadvantages of position.  She positioned her
craft so that the very tip of its shadow kissed the tail of his
bright red plane.  He was still acting as if he didn't know she was
there.  Which was impossible.  She could see three of his team's Zeppelins high above, and if she could see them, they sure as hell could see her.  So why was he playing stupid?"

Memorial Day
alicia_coleman
Here is a post from my Blogspot blog:

Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while      serving the United States Armed Forces. It originated after the Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. By the 1870's, soldiers of the Union and Confederate armies were included.

It was originally called Decoration Day. A day to decorated the graves of the fallen soldiers. The first known observance of a Decoration Day or Memorial Day type commemoration was in Charleston, South Carolina on May 1, 1865. In the 20th century, it was extended to honor all Americans who died in all wars. By the 1950's the theme was "American exceptionalism and duty to uphold freedom of the world."

So, THANK YOU! to all who gave their lives for our freedom. Your sacrifice is not forgotten.
